Philippians 4:11-12 – “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”
Most of us have used that phrase at one point or another— “If only I had [insert wish], then I could [insert goal],” or “If only [insert name] would [insert act], then I could truly be happy.”
We put so much of our mental and emotional energy into waiting for the fulfillment of a future blessing/goal/dream—that may or may not be promised—that we often end up putting our lives on hold and missing out on the blessings and wonder that God offers to us each and every day. We think that if we only had that job, that raise, that spouse, or that child, we could truly be happy, whole, and content. But what if God is actually waiting for us to open our eyes to the blessings already around us, and find joy in acknowledging these gifts, BEFORE He releases those new blessings into our lives?
None of us is promised tomorrow, and I’ve determined in 2017 to squeeze every ounce of joy, peace, and love out of each day. I want to live each day like it’s my last, being grateful for the blessings—big and small—that God bestows upon me and having NO regrets. I’m going to let go of the “If onlys” and find my contentment TODAY. Those future blessings will then simply be a bonus that adds to my already full and happy life.
We don’t have to wait for future blessings to be grateful, to find peace, to experience wholeness. Each day is rife with blessings that can bear these fruit; we have only to open our eyes and hearts to see them. As the new year gets under way, I encourage you be intentional about living for today, enjoying the moment, and squeezing every last drop of love, peace, joy, and…well…life out of each day! Don’t let even one day be wasted!
