Embrace Your Superpower!

SPIRITUAL GIFTS

1 Corinthians 12:7 – To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

The other day, my brother and I were talking about his uncanny ability to accurately judge a person’s character within a few seconds (minutes?) of meeting him. I’ve always known that he had this talent, but I took it with a grain of salt until he revealed during this particular conversation that sometimes, it was almost as if he could see something dark clinging to certain people who made him more wary. I was taken aback, because this indicated that he’d been gifted with the ability to discern things in the spiritual realm, and that I’d better start heeding his impressions moving forward.

I have to admit that I was just a little jealous. It was like he had this cool superpower! How great is it to be able to discern people’s character before they’ve said a single word!? My gift was so completely different and seemed paltry in comparison. I had this somewhat less exceptional (and not always useful) gift of always seeing the best in people, until their dark or hidden side emerged and the relationship (friendly, romantic, familial, or otherwise) blew up in my face. My penchant for seeing the good has actually made me increasingly wary of opening up to people and trusting them and their permanency in my life.

I pondered this for a while on that day, and eventually realized that this insight into the light in someone’s character wasn’t all bad. In fact, I began to understand that this tendency was a reflection of the gift of empathy—my own superpower! 🙂 I have always been hypersensitive to other people’s feelings, to the point of almost experiencing physical discomfort at the sight of pain in others. I’ve also had a penchant for understanding innately the emotions that certain scenarios and experiences trigger in others, which helps me understand (and empathize with) why they sometimes misguidedly embrace the dark side. This gift, while challenging at times, is the perfect complement to my calling to help and serve. As always, God knows what He’s doing!

We all have our spiritual gifts and talents, although they may manifest in different ways and at different times for different people. It’s easy to look longingly at someone else’s gift and think it’s the best thing in the world; but know that someone else may be looking at you in the exact same way. Your gift is special, useful, and uniquely tailor-made just for you and the calling God has placed on Your life. Embrace your gift, be grateful for it, and use it wisely and in love. After all, it’s pretty cool to have your own God-given superpower. 🙂

  1. Beautifully written! What a great encouragement. In the past, I often struggled with a tendency to admire someone else’s God-given superpower rather than be content with my own (which He revealed to me was really a lack of faith, of course). 🙂 Thank you for a great reminder!

Yes we who follow the Lord all have gifts to use in His service. We also may just have an incredible ability to do things like what you are talking about in your post. It can be used for good or bad. Your advice is sound…we should develop and use our abilities for the good of one another. A good post, Nichole!

I’ve been told I have the gift of discernment…not as sharp as your brother’s (lol) but, I also try to find the good in people as well 🙂 A very enlightening read 🙂

  4. I’m also jealous of your brother. I really want that spiritual gift. How do you find your spiritual gift? I think it’s easier to find your talent which may be singing or writing. When do you receive your spiritual gift? After you are baptized? Or was it there from birth and you have to activate it?

    • I honestly don’t pretend to be an expert (AT ALL lol); I’m still learning about them myself. But I do know that they are gifts of the Spirit, so it makes sense that they would manifest, or at least be most pronounced, after you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior and welcomed the Holy Spirit into your life. I have a couple gifts, some of which have been with me since childhood [I was baptized at a pretty young age (7)] and others that began to manifest when I really began to develop a true relationship with God later in life (early 30s). I think that when we draw closer to Him and really seek after His Will and His Way in our lives, He is better able to use us to fulfill our greater purpose in His kingdom, and we are more likely to see the manifestation of one or more spiritual gifts. Just a theory! Anyway, there are a lot of inventories and assessments out there to help you identify your gift(s). I imagine that some are likely more legitimate and helpful than others, though. I would say, more than anything, that if you’re trying to identify your own, prayer and meditation will always help–asking God to help you identify your gifts. It may not be revealed immediately, but He will always answer in time!

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

      • Thanks for responding! Because so many times you see people who have been baptized but it seems like they may not have discovered their spiritual gift. Personally, I know my talents that I’ve been given from birth. As for the spiritual gift, I’m not sure. Sometimes I get dreams about the future and it comes true. Like I had a dream many months ago that Donald Trump was going to win the election. I ignored the dream and said that could never happen. I also dreamed about a birth and I told my co-worker that I thought my dream was about her and she said No Way! and a month later, she found she was pregnant. I don’t know if that’s a spiritual gift but I don’t know how to activate it because I don’t dream that often but when I do, I have to immediately write it down because there is always a message.

      • Prophetic dreams definitely sound like a spiritual gift! You should have warned us that he was actually going to win LOL! Maybe we could have done more lol. *sigh* It’s in God’s hands now. I think (and again, this is just my speculation) that yours is a gift that comes and goes as the Spirit moves and God wills…I think it’s a great idea to journal your dreams. You never know when God might be speaking to you!
